Archaeological season has started (PHOTOS)

Nyalab Castle in Korolevo (first mention – 1279) has always fascinated scholars and historians who have sought to find in its ruins answers to the mysteries of the past. And with good reason: the castle, built on a mountain of volcanic origin, is an important architectural monument and a witness of many events. Castle Hill is unique in that it is cut off from all other mountains that are around. The distance to the nearest one is at least two kilometers.

Nyalab was the summer residence of Hungarian kings, who were coming here to hunt.

Modern scholars of Uzhgorod National University under the direction of archaeologist Igor Porokhnenko have carried out excavation of the ancient fortress for several years now. Now, a group of students from the Faculty of History started the summer of 2013 wiith the practical work on top of the castle hill. After a few weeks of hard work they have shoveled tens of tons of rocky soil and – having reached a four meters depth – they opened a big room with an area of over 30 square meters. Apparently, in ancient times it served as an ammunition dump, because they found a lot of cannonballs and bullets to muskets there. Perhaps at some point of time, there used to be a residential room there, as evidenced by the remains of an ancient fireplace.

However, excavations will continue in this year and probably the most exciting archaeological discoveries in Korolevo are ahead. By the way, many archaeological finds are now in museums of Budapest and Prague.
