A Transcarpathian paid with his freedom for bicycle theft

In March this year, the Court of Appeal in Transcarpathian region announced the verdict in the criminal case of a 48-year-old resident of Beregovo – a serial bicycle thief. According to the case, for a long time, the resident of Beregovo was committing thefts of two-wheeled vehicles in the center of Mukachevo, in different seasons and at different times of day. During six months, the thief managed to steal ten bicycles.

In general, his "collection" included bicycles of both foreign brands and domestic production. In the court of primary jurisdiction, the thief’s guilt was completely proven, and therefore appropriate punishment was imposed on him.

Since the unemployed resident of Beregovo had been held criminally liable for property offenses – theft and robbery – before, the Court of Appeal in Transcarpathian region, having studied the case in detail, found his conviction under Part 2 of Art. 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (theft committed repeatedly) using Art. 71 of the same Code to the real serving of punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of 4 years and 6 months legal, reasonable and fair, and ordered the convict to return unsold bicycles to rightful owners.

Tempted by other people’s property, even a criminal record did not stop the man from repeating the same mistakes. However, in the coming years, he will be paying for the criminal acts with his own freedom.
