Slovakia has studied technical opportunities for opening the railway route Uzhgorod-Kosice and identified 2 possible ways to solve this issue.
This was reported to the Mukachevo.net by the spokesman of the "Railway Company of Slovakia" Tomas Kovac.
According to him, the "Ukrzaliznytsya" and "Railway Company of Slovakia" have expressed a common interest in opening the border crossing point Matovce-Pavlovo for the purpose of railway passenger transportation.
– The purpose of this project is to provide railway communication from Kosice to Uzhgorod and then extended communication Kyiv-Uzhgorod-Matovce-Kosice-Bratislava / Prague, – Tomas Kovac said.
There are currently two state railway companies in Slovakia. The "Railway Company of Slovakia" (ZSSK) is engaged in transportation, and the "Railways of the Slovak Republic" (ZSK) is engaged in infrastructure development. Both these companies will be involved in opening the Uzhgorod-Kosice railway communication project. It is necessary because we have different railway gauges.
According to Tomas Kovac, there are two possible ways to arrange the communication between Uzhgorod and Kosice. The first option is the arrival of a train from Uzhgorod to Matovce by a wide gauge, and then it will be necessary to build a special infrastructure to adapt cars to the European gauge.
Another option is to build 11 kilometers of the European gauge railway to Uzhgorod.
