A meeting-requiem for the victims of deportations in 1944-46 will be held in Uzhgorod

September 9, 2014, in the regional capital of Transcarpathia, on Teatralna Square, there will be a meeting-requiem in memory of forcible deportation of Ukrainians from their ethnic lands by the Polish Committee of National Liberation in 1944-1946. Deportations carried out by the Polish authorities affected over half a million Ukrainians, thousands of them died.  The memorial event will be attended by participants of those events and their descendants.

As you know, September 9, 1944, three international treaties between the Polish People’s Liberation Committee and the Socialist Republics of Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania were signed to evacuate Ukrainian population from Poland and Polish citizens from the territory of the USSR. This became the reason for the eviction of Lemkos from their native lands and the mass deportations of Ukrainians from their ethnic territory. Deportations continued throughout 1944-1951 and were carried out using methods of state terror, with gross violation of human and nation rights, cynical disregard for the principles of justice. Unlike eviction of Poles from western Ukraine, deportation of Ukrainians from their ethnic lands had signs of ethnic cleansing.

Deportation of Ukrainians from ethnic Ukrainian lands was accompanied by political repression, mass terror by Polish chauvinistic gangs, burning of Ukrainian villages, inhuman abuses and brutal murders of thousands of innocent people. These events are still blank spot in history, and have not been condemned by the international community.

Almost in two years, 482,000 Ukrainians were deported from their ethnic lands, now part of Poland. Many witnesses to those events are living among us, they want to find their roots, the places in Poland, where they once lived.

The meeting-requiem will start at 18.00. We invite everyone to pray for the souls of the dead and bow heads to the victims of another Ukrainian tragedy of the twentieth century.
