On January 12, divisions of the Migration Service of Ukraine began accepting applications for a passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad of the new design containing a contactless electronic medium.
Also, under current law, citizens have the opportunity to receive a passport of the new design, but without biometric chip. Since the beginning of the week, 879 Transcarpathians have taken advantage of this right. 38 countrymen have applied for a passport containing a chip.
According to First Deputy Head of the Main Office of the SMS of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region Oleksandr Berdar, the first application for a document with biometric data was submitted by a man who is registered in Uzhgorod. Therefore, according to the signs, "biometric campaign" in Transcarpathia should be successful.
Documents issued before January 1, 2015, shall be valid until the date specified in the passport as the date of expiration. Citizen will still be able to travel abroad and receive visas with them. By the way, holders of biometric passports will also have to apply for Schengen visas to travel to Europe. New passport currently give no new advantages.
In the region, currently there is one workstation for issuing travel passports containing contactless electronic media. It is expected that on February another ten district units of the migration service will receive the equipment.
