History of Holodomor Remembrance Day

Holodomor Remembrance Day is held annually on the fourth Saturday of November, which this year is on the 28th. Official commemoration of the victims began in 1998 according to the decree of Leonid Kuchma. The current name and date of the day were set by Viktor Yushchenko’s decree in May 2007.

The Holodomor of 1930-1933

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ukraine survived three Holodomors: 1921-1923, 1932-1933 and 1946-1947. The most tragic of these was the famine of 32-33, which was organized by the Soviet authorities during Stalin’s repression. According to various estimates, between 4.5 and 10 million Ukrainians died during the horrific events of 1932-1933.
