Today, August 2, on the International Roma Holocaust Day, our memory goes back to the past, and we remember with sorrow those members of the Roma community who were deported from the occupied countries and exterminated in concentration camps by Nazi fascists during World War II.
It was on this day 76 years ago that more than 2,500 Roma were killed by the Nazis in gas chambers in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
Many died in forced labor camps and during punitive operations.
We honor the memory of the innocent victims, consciously remember the past to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
