Four starlings – part of the Drugets family emblem – still adorn the gate of the courtyard of Uzhgorod Castle.
700 years ago, representatives of this influential dynasty reigned over the capital of Transcarpathia and the surrounding territories. The new rulers brought the Italian-French culture into the region. But at first, the people did not agree to be subject to the new lords, despite the orders by King Carl Robert.
The events of those times were recreated at the festival "Silver Tatosh: the Age of Drugets". The organizers of the famous medieval culture festival, which takes place in the castle of St. Miklos in Mukachevo region (and the "Silver Tatosh" is recognized as the best festival of Transcarpathia), promised to organize an event in the regional center last year.
The reenactors marched from the spiritual center of Uzhgorod – the Horyany rotunda – to the "cross", the intersection of Korzo and Voloshin streets, and from where moved to the Ung fortress. The march symbolized the confrontation between the two camps: the local people and the knights. But during the spectacular march, the fights were strictly verbal.
In the Skansen, the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life, near Uzhgorod Castle, there was a medieval town with entertainment, a fair, a kitchen; visitors could try on costumes, shoot arrows, fight with soft swords, dance to romantic music of that era.
The epicenter of the holiday was, of course, the jousting field where “guests from the past” were fighting. Duels of reenactors, group battles and professional fights were performed by the best knights of the country, as well as international champions. By the way, Ukraine’s historical fencing team is the world leader in this sport.
