Teachers of UzhNU, together with history students, are exploring the ruins of the Church of St. George on the territory of the Uzhgorod castle. The main goal is to find out the period when the temple was erected and all stages of its reconsruction.
Almost two meters of the upper layer comprise of construction rubble. The researchers dug almost a meter deep to the level of the 17th century. They are exploring the central nave, which is considered to be the earliest part of the church. They have already found swords, coins, medallions, clothing items and bone remnants.
Excavations will last until July 20th. Theay are going to dig to the layer of soil without traces of human activity. Then, they will make scientific conclusions of this archaeological expedition.
