Hungarian organizations appealed to the President of Ukraine on the language law

Here is the text of the appeal:

"Dear Mr. Poroshenko!

The Hungarian national minority is outraged about the Law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state one" passed by the Verkhovna Rada. This law provides for the exclusive use of the state language in almost all spheres of public life, including education, mass media, economic, political and cultural activities, and excludes the possibility of using any other language in public communication. The law not only makes it impossible to use the languages of national minorities in the public sphere, but also provides for sanctions against violators of language rules in contradiction with the current Constitution of Ukraine and the provisions of numerous international obligations assumed by the Ukrainian state.

In our opinion, the Law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state one" passed by the Verkhovna Rada is discriminatory, which basically violates the human rights of Ukrainian citizens, dramatically restricts the rights of national minorities of Ukraine to free use of their native languages, continues to increase the tension both in the internal, and the foreign policy of the state. The law also contradicts Ukraine’s aspirations for European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Therefore, we ask you, as the guarantor of the Constitution of Ukraine, not to sign this law."
