Transcarpathia is in anxious anticipation. After a few weeks of cold weather, that covered the surface of the rivers with ice, it has become warmer. And it is expected that ice drift may begin on most waterways. And it can be dangerous – large ice blocks often create jams, and melting snow adds a lot of water, so the water level increases significantly.
Last night, we went to the shore of the Uzh to see if the ice had started moving. As a result, we got quite an interesting observation.
At about 17.00, on Nezalezhnist embankment, in front of the Linguistic Gymnasium, the Uzh was clear. There was not a single ice block on the surface of the water.
But after wandering around the center of the city for just half an hour we noticed something approaching down the Uzh from the Radvanka… Is it ice? It was difficult to make out in twilight… Yes, it really is! Another couple of minutes – and the river is no longer recognizable…
Of course, there was not as much ice as it was in 2017…
…but it was still interesting to look at.
However, it seems that this ice drift was a local, temporary phenomenon. Because today, on Monday morning, the surface of the Uzh looks quite clear, just few ice blocks drifting towards Slovakia…
