Transcarpathia wants to get rid of plastic

On July 26, the plenary meeting of the Transcarpathian Regional Council was held. In addition to numerous working issues, the agenda included an appeal to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regarding the need for legislative changes.

These changes relate to restrictions and prohibitions on the use of plastic and polyethylene on both the territory of Ukraine and in Transcarpathian region. On the initiative of Olga Pavlova, Lyudmila Syuzeva and the team of "Happy Children", we have prepared a corresponding appeal to the Parliament on behalf of the deputies of the Regional Council.

According to the UN, every minute, 10 million plastic bags are used in the world, and it will take hundreds of years for them to decay. Given this state of affairs, 44 countries of the world have completely or partially banned the use of such bigs.

In many countries, there are legislative restrictions on the production and use of plastic bags and packaging, fiscal mechanisms (fees and taxes levied on sales of polyethylene bags), which in general promotes the gradual replacement of such packaging materials with environmentally sound ones.

The deputies supported this appeal. "I am convinced that this is an important step towards solving environmental problems. Unfortunately, we can not build a waste recycling plant in every city and village, however, even without any legislative bans, we can stop using bags and various plastic utensils, that will pose environmental threat even to our descendants," – the director of the department of economy of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Denys Man wrote in his facebook page.
