The smallest regional center of Ukraine – 1124-year-old Uzhgorod – is a city that carries a mark of several historical epochs and the rule of a dozen states. In particular, this also applies to architecture, and that part of it that can only be seen from special places, the UNN reports.
Uzhgorod roofs are vast landscapes, panoramas of various shapes and colors, a territory often untouched by modern civilization with its barbaric interference. The city’s landscape allows to see Uzhgorod roofs without the need to get very high. Different views of Uzhgorod show the bastion of the Uzhgorod castle, castle stairs, slopes near Uzhgorod National University, the "Rock Garden", the intersection of Kapitulna and Voloshin streets and so on.
The most picturesque Uzhgorod roofs in the old part of the city are, of course, the central cathedrals, the regional art museum, the Reformed Church on Zhupanatska Square.
But the best spot is the towers of the main Greek Catholic cathedral of Uzhgorod. And the UNN managed to get there. Here you can see the inner part of the most beautiful roof of the city, and the panoramic Uzhgorod, and the bells themselves, named by patrons in honor of St. Peter and Paul, St. Nicholas and the Virgin. And the oldest operating city clock is installed in one of the towers – the ancient Austrian mechanism of 1878 and still correctly tells time.
From the tower, you can see the roof of the old building of the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic (formerly the synagogue), the Orthodox Cathedral, the Roman Catholic Church, the Reformed Church…
Yes, Uzhgorod is not a city of skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. The number of floors of apartment buildings does not exceed 16, and there are only two such high buildings. That is why the panoramas of the city from high spots mainly consist of private houses surrounded by nine- and five-story buildings with domes and towers of various temples. Also, the panorama of Uzhgorod includes a bit of foreign land and a lot of mountains.
