Cheesemakers of Rakhiv district will be the first to receive Geographical Indication

The EU project for supporting the development of the geographical indication system in Ukraine has begun its work in the highest corner of Ukraine – Rakhiv district, the press service of the Rakhiv District State Administration reported.

On March 1, in the Rakhiv District State Administration, there was a meeting of the key expert on geographical indications Darko Yakshich and a junior expert on the development of geographical indications for food (cheese) in the western part of Ukraine Hanna Antonyuk with cheese producers of Rakhiv district.

The project, which will be implemented on the territory of Rakhiv district, is intended to support the implementation of the Association Agreement on geographical indications, in view of ensuring their protection and creation of opportunities for value added products, stimulating the implementation of local initiatives, in particular for small producers, in this case, the producers of buts, bryndzya and vurda.

The purpose of the Project is to create a Ukrainian Geographical Indication System. Thus, Rakhiv district cheese makers will be the first to receive GI.

The right to geographic indication allows its owners to prevent the use of the indication by third parties whose products do not meet the required standards. The geographical indication is similar to a trademark and it gives a certain message to the buyer – it says that the product was made in a specific place and, accordingly, has certain characteristics that can be found only in this place, – the expert on geographical indications Darko Yakshich said.

Cheesemakers, who will become the participants of the Project, will be provided with expert assistance to achieve the planned goal – receiving the GI, – the expert on the development of geographical indications, Hanna Antonyuk noted.
