As we announced, the film tour "Roma that you did not know" has begun in Transcarpathia.
Viktor Chovka told how and where the show will take place.
Why in Transcarpathia? I think, the answer is obvious. There are many of us (Roma) here, and therefore the film can be shown to big Roma communities of our region. But, unfortunately, there are no stories about Transcarpathian Roma in this documentary film. It’s because Transcarpathia is a unique and multicultural region that can not be piled together with other regions and require a separate film about the diversity of the Roma population.
The film is the first documentary project in Ukraine about contemporary Ukrainian Roma women. The seven women in the film are presented as strong in spirit, they are the leaders of their communities or their families, which is not typical for the Roma community. That is why these women are well-known figures among the Roma community in Ukraine.
The film tour began on October 2, 2017 in Uzhgorod with a press conference, where the organizers of the cultural event "Roma that you did not know" explained the main idea of the film.
The first screening of the film took place in the Roma settlement of the village of Velyki Luchky in Mukachevo district. There are more than 500 Roma people in the village, not counting the children, many of the residents do not have passports at all.
The show was mainly attended by Roma women, because according to the old Romani rules, men "do not interfere" with the "women’s affairs". But even here, time makes its adjustments, because some men also attended the screening of the film "Seven Success Stories of Romani Women in Ukraine." Both women and men watched the film with enthusiasm and actively participated in the discussion. Local resident Tetyani Rusoa helped to translate the film from Ukrainian to Hungarian, because Roma people in Velyki Luchky speak Hungarian.
