Uzhgorod residents will be able to see a unique exhibition “Vanished world of Carpathian Ruthenia in the photographs of Rudolf Hulka”

On May 11, at 18:00, the vernissage of the exhibition "Vanished world of Carpathian Ruthenia in the photographs of Rudolf Hulka" will be held in the ILKO Gallery

The exhibition "Vanished world of Carpathian Ruthenia in the photographs of Rudolf Hulka" is a unique collection of historical photographs from the territories of modern Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. The collection is stored in the Prague Slavonic Library (department of the National Library of the Czech Republic). The photos date from the first half of the 1920s, ie the period when this region in 1919-1939 was a part of Czechoslovakia and called Carpathian Ruthenia. The author of the pictures is an amateur photographer Rudolf Hulka (1887-1961).

The exhibited color and monochrome photographs show the scenes of eveyday life, the work of farmers and urban residents, their traditions, rural and urban architecture, handmade items and art objects, industrial buildings and roads, natural motifs. They also capture local versions of folk costumes and unique religious monuments, mostly wooden churches of a great cultural and historical value. The photos show a wide ethnic and religious variety of local population (Ukrainians, Hungarians, Jews, Roma, Slovaks and Czechs). All these motifs together created a unique flavor, genius loci of the Carpathian society, most of which vanished over the following decades of the twentieth century.

The aim of the exhibition is to present a representative sample of Hulka’s photograph collection, both from geographical, thematic and from the technical and artistic perspective.   
The exhibition will run until May 31, 2017.
