Heavy snowfall is expected in Transcarpathia

According to the forecasts, during 12-14 of January, heavy snowfall, slush build-up, strong winds, ice, in mountainous areas blizzards, snow drifts are expected in Transcarpathia. According to preliminary estimates, the total snow depth will grow by about 15-40 centimeters, and in some places – up to 60-80 centimeters. Snow will begin on January 12 at night, during January 13, its rate will be increasing. The heaviest snow is expected in mountainous districts – Volovets, Mizhhirya, Rakhiv, Velyky Berezny, as well as in Svalyava and Tyachiv districts. Because of the increase in temperature, weather forecasters also predict sleet and ice. After passing of the cyclone, temperature in the region will decrease again.

The head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal asks to refrain from driving, going to the mountains, leaving home unless necessary.

If all the predictions come true, snowfall will stop no sooner than on Sunday, Hennadiy Moskal said during the meeting of the operational headquarters of the regional commission on technological-ecological safety and emergency situations. Regional services, medics, road workers and emergency crews have to work in emergency mode. Heads of district administrations, heads of services when necessary must engage additional vehicles of forestries and other entities for snow plowing and dispensing antiglaze mizture.

In addition, it is recommended to close schools and cancel extracurricular classes. Also, if necessary, traffic of freight transport on the roads in the region will be limited. Drivers will be warned about weather conditions at the checkpoints on the border.
