The Transcarpathian juniors Champions of Ukraine in fencing (VIDEO)

The Transcarpathian fencers have become champions at the All-Ukrainian tournament. Thus, the junior team have become Champions of Ukraine in Kyiv. The ‘golden’ team is composed of Artem Matevosov, Vladyslav Kovalenko, Yan Baran, and Serhiy Horetskyi.

“This year we did not have to fight the most principle opponent. It has always been Kharkiv. It happened so that Kharkiv has not got to this part of the competition and we won”, – says Vladyslva KOVALENKO, fencer, Champion of Ukraine.

“The first match was the hardest. Not everyone managed to stretch their muscles. We were not fully awaken and it was difficult” – adds Yan BARAN, fencer, Champion of Ukraine.

“We fenced with the team “Kyiv-2” at the finals. It was somewhat unexpected. This is a cadet team that is fencing in the up to 16 year’s category now. They have become Champions of Ukraine in this composition. But they had to compete with their older colleagues, though they showed a nice result. They defeated the Kharkiv team that was expected to win the gold. This team was also a favourite. In turn, we went through all the stages confidently. We had no problems”, – says Serhiy HORETSKYI, fencer, Champion of Ukraine.

Moreover, the Transcarpathians earned individual awards as well. Thus, Serhiy Horetskyi became the bronze medalist and was chosen to be a member of the junior National team. This means, he will take part in the European Championship, according to the Ukrainian Championship.

“This Championship made it possible for me to become a member of the Ukrainian national team and in two weeks we will travel to Serbia to take part in the European Championship. The team is composed of three boys from Kharkiv and me. I had two quite difficult matches. To compete within the best sixteen, I had to defeat a boy from Kharkiv. He is younger than me but is very talented. I like his fencing style. I won with one thrust, though I was losing with 14:13. To compete at the semi-final, I had win in the match with a boy from Lviv. In this match, I had been also losing with 4-5 thrusts, but made all the efforts and won”, – says Serhiy HORETSKYI, fencer, Champion of Ukraine.

For the time being, the fencers are drawing conclusion about their competitions in February and are prepairing for the Ukrainian and European tournaments. They are additionally encouraged by the fact that our countryman Anatoliy Herey has received the license to participate at the Olympic Games in Rio-de-Janeiro, together with the national team.

“We had a rapier fencing Ukrainian championship on 12-14 February. Although we had no luck individually, we had the third place in team fight (the team of Anhelina Trsymbolynets, Mariya Kryvonos, Daniela Tovtyn, and Diana Padalkina). Following this tournament, I and my sportsmen have come to Kyiv. Here, our fencers took the first place and Serhiy Horetskyi won the bronze prize. On 19 February, the competition among the youngest took place in Kyiv. We had achievements there as well. Anastasiya Holych, pupil of Viktoriya Petryshak took the first place. Olena Synytsia was third, Maxym Rusyn too and Andriy Kuzma was among the top eight. At the same time, Anatoliy Herey in the composition of the Ukrainian national team took the third place in Vancouver. Now, our national team is 100% sure to take part in the Olympiad having achieved the 2 world rating. Most likely, they are going to compete the Venezuelan team. This gives almost a 90% probability getting to the 4 best national teams of the world”, – says Serhiy HORETSKYI, senior coach of the Transcarpathian team.
