Today, the Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate Christmas Eve

Today, 6 January, Ukrainians celebrate Christmas Eve.

The evening of Christmas Eve is on the last day of Advent. Therefore, meals should be lenten. It is believed that there should be 12 lenten dishes on the table in honor of the 12 disciples of Christ.

In different regions of Ukraine, there are different traditions of celebration, but the ritual of cooking of the first kutya is known everywhere. Its called Rich, because, besides it, they would make eleven meatless dishes, including beat-route soup, fish, mushrooms, pies with beans and cabbage, potatoes and stewed fruit.

Once the first evening star appeared in the sky, a family would sit at a table.

In Ukraine, there is still a great tradition of caroling when children go from house to house, singing Christmas songs, carols, wishing the hosts all kinds of success. And the hosts, in turn, reward children with sweets and coins, which, according to legend, bring good luck for the whole year.

At midnight, in churches festive worships on the occasion of the great event, which became the starting point of a new era, begin.
