235 years ago, the Greek-Catholic Cathedral was consecrated in Uzhgorod (PHOTOS)

The 235th anniversary if the consecration of the Uzhgorod Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral was celebrated with the Bishop Worship.

On Friday, 15 October, it was conducted by Bishop Milan and Bishop Nil with dozens of priests from different parishes of Mukachevo Greek Catholic diocese.

It is the so-called Day of Maria-Teresia. The then Bishop of the Diocese of Andriy Bachynsky in gratitude for the patronage of the Austrian Empress Maria-Teresia consecrated the Cathedral on that day. The high guest was also expected at the event, but the Empress was seriously ill at that time.

During the speech, Bishop Milan mentioned that the Cathedral was founded in 1640 by the will of the family of then Uzhgorod masters Drugets. In 1644, the construction was suspended due to the war between Transylvania and Austria. So, all the works were completed only in 1646.

Bishop Milan said that we should thank God for the opportunity to pray in the cathedral today.

Recall that this temple still keeps many secrets. The last discovery was made quite recently. Thanks to a European grant, in 2010-2013 years, the cathedral sanctuary was being restored, and they found a unique painting of the XVIII century. It is now known that it was made by the artist Andriy Trtina. He worked on the sanctuary of the cathedral by the order of then Bishop Andriy Bachynsky. In fact, it was the last work of Trtina. As for the iconostasis of the cathedral, it is very interesting, and, according to historical data, it is the work of Francisk Fech. The iconostasis is two-tiered (XVII century.), and as for the decor, it is based on urban art. This is the style of Empress Maria-Teresia – Austrian Rococo.
