"A year ago, Transcarpathia felt what the war was. On June 14, 2014, our first boy was killed by the enemy. Roland Popovich. Young, cheerful young man from Beregovo, from a Ukrainian-Hungarian family. After serving conscript military service, he continued serving under contract in the 128th brigade, he fought until stopped by a sniper bullet near Luhansk. The funeral was attended, it seemed, by the whole town, nobody was holding back tears. It was very sad and even scary then – we began to lose our own, the war came close. We did not know that it would take so many lives and hoped that the first loss would be the last one. We will not forgive. And of course, will not forget! Heroes do not die. I bow my head to the parents, to grandfather, to the girlfriend who, people say, was waiting for him to come back from the front… Roland will be 19-year-old forever. Rest in peace, boy! We are praying. May his colleagues came back alive…" – the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Vasyl Hubal wrote on his page in Facebook.
