January 24 in Uzhgorod seemed to be quite a hot day. In the capital of Transcarpathia people picketed the mayor’s office and blocked the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration. Here is a brief chronicle of the events.
"Avalanche" of the protests, which covered almost entire country did not pass around Uzhgorod. At 12.00 Uzhgorod citizens arrived at the town hall. Activists in particular demanded the resignation of Mayor Victor Pogorelov and his two deputies, who also belong to the Party of Regions. People wanted to see the mayor, and requested to convene an extraordinary session of the City Council.
Then protestors moved forward to the regional administration at the People’s Square.
Calls to the governor with a demand to come out to people were ignored. The living border of dozens of policemen was inside the building. Olexander Ledyda agreed to talk to the activists.
Negotiations were considered by the activists to be a failure. Blocking of the administration was announced and people were called to mobilization. Leaders say they wish everything went peaceful.
To be continued …
The atmosphere of the day can be felt in the photos below.
