41% of the population of Ukraine believe that joining the European Union should be the priority over the Customs Union.
These are the results of a nationwide poll conducted by the Foundation "Democratic Initiatives of Ilko Kucheriv" together with "Ukrainian Sociology service".
The Customs Union is the priority for 33% of Ukrainian. Meanwhile, 25% of the population are undecided.
Thus, in the case of a referendum on joining the EU, 45% of the population would vote for accession, 28% – against it, 9% would not take part in the referendum, and 17.5% could not decide on their choice.
If there was a referendum on joining the CU, 38% would vote for it, 30% – against it, 10% would not take part in the referendum and 21% are undecided.
The EU supporters dominate in the western and central regions, and supporters of the Customs Union – in the south and east.
Youth and representatives of the age group of 30-54 years prefer integration into the European Union, and the relative majority of the oldest group support the idea of joining the CU, but 33% of the population over the age of 55 give priority to the EU membership. The number of undecided respondents is the largest among the oldest generation – 26.5%.
Joining the EU is prioritized by the voters of opposition parties. In particular, the accession to the EU is a priority for the electorate of "Svoboda" (85%), "Batkivshchyna" (77%) and "UDAR" (74.5%). The accession to the CU in the alternative formulation is supported by the voters of CPU (93%) and the Party of Regions (61%).
The survey was conducted from 5 to 16 of October 2013. A total of 2,000 respondents were interviewed on a sample representative of the adult population of Ukraine (over 18 years) by such indicators as gender, age, education level, type and the region of residence. The sample error – 2.3%.
