What should bicycle parking in Uzhgorod be like? (Announcement of the competition)

Concerned citizens were stirred by an unusual innovation – "bicycle parking" in Uzhgorod, which, let’s be honest, looks more like advertising space.

And although the "bicycle parking", which was installed on Korzo (right across the pedestrian street!) was quickly dismantled after the opposition expressed by the public, the racks with inscriptions "place for advertisement here" continue to emerge in the historic center – they are already at the beginning of Voloshin and Korzo streets, and now on Teatralna Square.

 While citizens are surprised about unexpected racks, that look like wire hangers, cyclists unanimously say – these designs do not fit for bicycle parking. And the public concerned about aesthetic appearance of the city are outraged: they are also quite inappropriate for the city center.  It seems that the goal is quite different: not to help in the development of cycling infrastructure, but to place advertising space.

In fact, there is no need to reinvent the wheel! Europe, where there is now a cycling boom, is full of original ways of solving this issue. If approached wisely, parking can be not only convenient and appropriate, but also such that will decorate the city, or even cause a smile or become part of the tourist attraction.

Given all this, uzhgorod.in announces contest of ideas as to what the bicycle parking for Uzhgorod should be like. We are more than sure that there are many ideas for bicycle parkings that would not clutter the city, but adorn it, become a highlight or (which is important!) simply be convinient for ones they are designed for – for cyclists! Of course, no talks about advertising…

The competition is informal, it’s just about ideas that would have been positive for Uzhgorod, and we’re not talking about the jury and the way to determine the winners. But first, we are sure that some of the best ideas that will be most suitable for our city will be implemented, and second, we will find the way to reward the author!

Of course, Uzhgorod is a unique city with its own character, so it deserves to have original bibycle parkings, which would not look out of place and unnecessary.
