Tulip experiments: in the Botanical Garden they pollinate the exotic tree

White pouches appeared on the Liriodendron tulipifera from North America. They are wrapped around yellow and green cups – flowers of the tulip tree. As we found out, they are conducting an experiment there. It is aimed to determine the tree’s ability for self-pollinating, since it breeds mostly by seeds.

The best time to study the Liriodendron is in June when it is all covered with flowers. And this year, in our garden these trees (as well as magnolias) blossomed earlier. By the way, the tulip tree is the closest relative of the magnolia. Translated its name means "a lyre tree". And it is called tulip tree because of fragrant orange flowers that resemble tulips. Flowers are large – up to 6 cm in diameter. The tree can live up to 500 years.
