The new “improvement”: Ukraine is ready to raise gas prices for households

The Government of Ukraine is ready to raise gas tariffs for some consumers. This was stated by the Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara in the commentary to The Wall Street Journal in Brussels.

He also made it clear that in this way one of the main obstacles to the signing of an agreement with the IMF on a new loan can be eliminated.

Kozhara also noted that Ukraine would not pay a fine of $ 7 billion under the invoice presented this week by the Russian energy giant "Gazprom" to "Naftogaz" for underpurchased gas last year.

The Foreign Minister also warned Russia that if they keep gas price for Ukraine as it is now they may lose a key export market.

As you know, late last year, the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov expressed hope that the IMF would agree to give Ukraine the next tranche of the loan without the condition of increasing energy tariffs for the population.

In January 2013, Azarov said that the tariffs for the utilities would be raised, but not as much as required by the IMF.
