In Uzhgorod the best communities of Ukraine and Slovakia were awarded in the framework of the European Mobility Week

In Uzhgorod there was the closing conference "European Mobility Week in the Carpathians: promoting sustainable mobility." Communities presented the best examples of EMW in 2012, public initiatives, discussed the prospects of improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. Representatives from communities of Slovakia and Transcarpathia as well as from Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Chernivtsi participated in the conference.  
This year 16 cities, towns and villages of Ukraine, including 7 in Transcarpathia, officially took part in European Mobility Week. Total number of communities that joined EMW increased compared with the last year by 12 communities. In Slovakia, 9 municipalities joined the European Mobility Week in 2011, and 13 – in 2012. These data were voiced by the representatives of the "European Mobility Week in the Carpathians" project. 
The project was implemented by NGO FORZA in cooperation with the Regional Development Agency of Kosice (Slovakia) during the years 2011-2012 in the framework of Cross Border Cooperation Programme of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument Hungary – Slovakia – Romania – Ukraine 2007-2013, financed by the European Union.
The main result of this project was the participation of communities of Ukraine and Slovakia in the general movement of European Mobility Week, which was described in detail by representatives of Ukrainian and Slovakian parties, Lesya Loiko and Heiza Lehen. Within the project 21 communities in 2011 and 26 communities in 2012 in Slovakia and Ukraine joined the initiative of the European Mobility Week (EMW), during which management of cities and villages carried out measures to improve the urban environment, the creation of pedestrian zones, zones of reduced speed and restricted areas for cars, promoting smarter, healthier alternative means of transportation.
One of the components of the project was a contest of permanent measures for those settlements that have made some improvement of the infrastructure for the benefit of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. In Slovakia, the prize in the form of figurine of Pegasus on wheels was awarded to mayors of Poprad and Moldava over Bodvou who directed their efforts at improving infrastructure for cyclists, and the experience of these cities was also presented at the final conference. The best Transcarpathian municipalities in 2012 in the formation of a sustainable urban mobility are Mukachevo (second consecutive year) for the expansion of areas without automobiles and improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and settlement of Volovets for the introduction of the pedestrian zone on weekends. The village of Kostylivka which, incidentally, was the first in the history of Ukraine to join the EMW (2010), received a special award for continued activity and initiative in organizing the European mobility week, and the city of Perechyn received the award for improving the urban environment for the younger generation .
The final conference was also attended and addressed by the activists and coordinators of the most exciting and vibrant initiatives and projects aimed at popularization and promotion of sustainable means of transport in Transcarpathia.  
Throughout the conference participants had ample opportunities for informal communication and exchange of ideas and experiences, which, in fact, was one of the goals of the event. The organizers said they hoped that the participants of the conference will continue to jointly promote the issue of sustainable means of transport and mobility models in their communities, to take an active part in organizing the European mobility week in the coming years. In the future NGO FORZA will not forsake their role as a consultant in the organization of EMW.
