The politician commented on the statement of the Party of Regions member Volodymyr Zakurenyy that Transcarpathian Regional Council has no statutory authority for the recognition of the regional status of the Hungarian language.
"Some officials of Transcarpathian Regional Council seem to be stoned, having said today that the local council is not empowered to grant any language regional status" – Baloha wrote on his page on Facebook.
"They decided to just dismiss the status of Hungarians in Transcarpathia. What does that mean?
The new law on languages clearly was written to support only one language – Russian. Because it appears that Kharkiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv and other regional councils have enough powers to recognize Russian as regional language and Transcarpathian council such authority has not.
This is absurd. It’s just that someone who says such things, knows that they have not enough votes to decide on the language issue. And this can not be done, because it breaches the country.
Romanians, Gypsies, Hungarians, Hutsuls, Bulgarians, Greeks, Russians, all of them are equal and have equal rights to use the language they want. And for that, they do not need any special status.
Personally, I’m convinced that the only official language of the state must be Ukrainian. And each of us may speak that language they want.
Hungarians in Transcarpathia have been freely using their language for many years and they do not need somebody’s "benefaction."
And all these language laws are nothing but pre-election speculation. "
