Seven men had been fishing since six o’clock in the morning on an artificial lake in the village of Pavshino and celebrating birthday of one of the casualties.
Above the wooden pier at a height of seven metres there was a high-voltage power line. Throwing a rod one of the fishermen touched a live wire of 110,000 volts. The current was so strong that the guys were thrown into the water.
Three of them died immediately. Four others were hospitalized, one is in a serious condition – he has got 30 percent of his body burnt. The fishermen were from 20 to 30 years old.
"Can you imagine 110,000 volts? It may happen even without a rod touching power lines. Half a metre would suffice, it can create an electric arc and hit with an electric current. Now, a lot of rods are telescopic. They are current-carrying", says the head of Mukachevo District Department of Ministry of Emergency in Transcarpathian region Vasily Pehnyo.
