The exhibition of works by one of the brilliant representatives of the Transcarpathian school of painting – Zoltan Sholtes (1909 – 1990) – solemnly opened in the building of the Consulate General of Hungary in the city of Uzhgorod. And although only 8 works by the master are presented in the lobby, it still gives you an opportunity to get an idea of his art style. The event was moderated by Laszlo Kuti.
The Consul General of Hungary in Uzhgorod, Jozsef Buhajla, noted that Zoltan Sholtes was a Greek Catholic priest, who devoted his life to God and art. The first exhibition of the artist took place in Uzhgorod in 1933, in 1946 he became a member of the Transcarpathian organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, and in 1975 he received the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine.
All the paintings presented here are from the family collection and were provided for the exhibition by the artist’s son, Uzhgorod architect and artist Stepan Sholtes. He said that his father liked plein airs, meetings with artists.
The director of the Transcarpathian Art Museum Francisk Erfan said that the Consulate General is becoming a platform for exhibitions and other cultural events. Over the past few years, almost 20 exhibitions have taken place there.
