The Lithuanian city of Kaunas hosted the World Championship in bench press. The national team of Ukraine included three representatives of UzhNU: students Yelizaveta Ban and Yevhen Krysa and their coach, senior teacher of physical education and sport department Andriy Fedorishko.
Yelizaveta Ban, who was competing among juniors (under 23 years), showed the best result at the tournament. In the tough competition with a Russian athlete she became the world champion in the weight category up to 47 kg, setting two records of Ukraine. This result would have been enough for her to win in the heavier category up to 52 kg, and if the rules of the competition allowed to compete in different age groups, she would have ranked second among adult athletes. As a result of the competition, our student also won the cup for the third place among athletes of all weight categories. Lisa has twice been a silver medalist of similar Championships and, finally, she won the gold medal and received the title of international class master of sports of Ukraine.
Yevhen Krysa gained success in the weight category up to 74 kg. In the second attempt, he lifted 217.5 kg, and finished second, 12.5 kg ahead of the bronze medalist and losing the champion from Kazakhstan only 2.5 kg.
With their results at the World Championship, which are a unique achievement for Transcarpathian powerlifting, students of UzhNU made a significant contribution to the medal count of Ukrainian team. Also, according to the results of the competition, Yelizaveta Ban was accepted to the national team of Ukraine to participate in the European Championship for adult athletes to be held in August in Slovakia.
