The world marks the third Sunday of May as the day of remembrance of people who died from HIV / AIDS. Tomorrow, May 18, 2014, at 12.00, on Teatralna Square in Uzhgorod, there will be the campaign "Names", dedicated to the Day of remembrance of people who died of AIDS.
The purpose of the campaign is to show the magnitude of the tragedy that is happening in Ukraine, Valentin Sokyrko, the initiator of the campaign says: "We want to draw attention to the reasons through which we are losing so many Ukrainians. The main reasons are usually a shortage of essential treatment programs, drugs, preventive measures and lack of attention to HIV / AIDS problems by the authorities at the national and regional levels."
The International Movement "Names" originated in 1987 in the United States. Activist Cleve Jones, in order to express the pain of loss and outrage about authorities nonfeasance, sewed a quilt in memory of a friend who died of AIDS. Now, this initiative has spread around the world. The International AIDS Memorial "Quilt" is the main symbol of the "Names" movement. It includes 5683 sections of commemorative canvases featuring 82,000 names of people who died of AIDS.
In 2014, the event "Names" will take place all over Ukraine: every city will present its quilt and remember those who are gone because of HIV / AIDS.
