Today is the second Christmas Eve or “Hungry kutia”

Today, January 18, on the eve of one of the three biggest Christian holidays – Epiphany – Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate "Hungry kutia" or the second Christmas Eve.

During the day, believers do not eat anything – fasting. They have supper, when evening star starts shining. Only lenten meals are served.

On this day, in the morning, they consecrate water in churches. Master of the house sprinkles with holy water all members of the family, the house and other buildings, wells. 

According to the tradition, the ceremony of water consecration often takes place in the open air, on the banks of rivers, streams and lakes.It is believed that on Epiphany, from midnight to midnight, the water acquires curative properties and stores them for a year, healing physical and spiritual illness.
