The prosecutor’s office has opened criminal proceedings against Transcarpathian customs officials

The Prosecutor’s Office of Transcarpathian region has opened criminal proceedings against officials of the Transcarpathian Customs of the State Customs Service under Part 2 of Art. 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (abuse of office for the purpose of obtaining illegal benefits, which caused severe consequences).
The opening of the case was a reaction to reports in the media, which stated that Hungarian law enforcement officers had found a warehouse with contraband cigarettes in a house in a village near the Hungarian-Ukrainian border.
According to preliminary information from the police, one million packs of cigarettes, walkie-talkies and equipment for border crossing were found in the premises. Also 8 people were detained, including citizens of Ukraine and Hungary.
The investigation in this criminal case will be carried out by investigators of the territorial office of the State Bureau of Investigations located in Lviv. Procedural control will be provided by the Prosecutor’s Office of Transcarpathian region.
