In Uzhgorod Press Club, there was a press conference on the occasion of the third Short Film Festival "Migration – an attempt to escape or the right to a better life?" to be held in Uzhgorod. The event was attended by the Swiss filmmaker Fernand Melhar.
Natalia Kabatsiy, the director of the "Medical Aid Committee in Transcarpathia" said that the main goal of the festival is to present the view on migration issues, protection of refugees and asylum seekers, different from that which prevails in the media. "We want to give people the right to express their views through short films – N. Kabatsiy said. – Our organization helps refugees and asylum seekers (by providing medical, social and legal assistance), so this is our response to the manipulation in the media regarding this subject. In the media, there are many articles that cover only detention of illegal immigrants, while the problem itself is not widely covered. Why do these people leave their countries? What’s in it for them? What does this mean for Ukraine? In addition, this topic is relevant for Transcarpathia because many people leave abroad in search of a better life."
Fernand Melhar, director, documentary film maker, the Chairman of the Jury of the III Short Film Festival "Migration – an attempt to escape or the right to a better life?" said that his film is about the dream of Europe. The director filmed people from Africa and the East, who sought to go to Europe, fleeing war and poverty, but because of problems with documents they had to go home – by special charters equipped for sending people to third world countries.
"Currently, the EU has been waging an unofficial war for the protection of its borders, the protection from migration. Therefore, my film deals with the politics of the European Union, the expulsion of defenseless people," – Fernard Melhar said.
