Potushnyak? Meysarosh? Blagoev? Renaming mess from the “Pidzamok” LLC

Today, we have received an information from residents of… some street in Uzhgorod.

For years, the street which they live on, bore the name of the Bulgarian revolutionary Dimitri Blagoev.

But then, under the law on discommunization, Blagoev street became subject to renaming. And, by the order of the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal, it was renamed in March this year. Then, it was decided to name this street in honor of the Transcarpathian writer Fedir Potushnyak.

And, the other day, a new sign has appeared on one of the five-story buildings. With the name of…  Karl Meysarosh, Transcarpathian journalist and historian.

Residents of the street were genuinely surprised. Having nothing against K.Meysarosh, they wondered, on what grounds the former Blagoev street had been renamed once again and why was it done in secret?

We decided to investigate. First, we found the list of streets to be renamed under decommunisation.  Quite predictably, there was the name of Potushnyak there. Maybe we don’t know something, and the list has been revised by the city government?

We appealed to the press service of the City Council. The answer was unambiguous – there have been no changes to the list. But the fact of the sign is quite obvious. So, let’s go back to the list. According to it, a street in Uzhgorod indeed was to be named after Karl Meysarosh, specifically – former Serhiy Lazo street.

Now everything is clear. Both streets – Potushnyak (Blagoev) and Meysarosh (Lazo) – are served by the "Pidzamok" LLC.  Apparently, the "Pidzamok" decided to replace the signs with new ones. And this is where human factor intervened – the workers installing the signs either misplaced them, or did not care at all. "According to the Acceptance certificate, there must be "Sign – one piece" – there you have it, what else do you want?" – right?

We hope that after this article, the mistake will be corrected. I think it is easier to replace plates than to adopt a separate decision of the City Council on name correction, isn’t it?

Or maybe, just leave it as it is? Make it a local attraction and otganize tours "The Messy Uzhgorod."  Great idea!
