Today is the 79th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy.
In Uzhgorod, the victims were commemorated on Yevhen Fentsyk Square near the Holocaust memorial.
The head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, Oleksiy Petrov, the head of the Transcarpathian Regional Council, Mykhailo Rivis, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv, and other officials and members of the Jewish community laid flowers at the memorial and lit candles.
Babyn Yar became a mass grave and a symbol of the Holocaust in Ukraine. From September 1941 to the end of September 1943, the Nazis were regularly executing and burying there Jews, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war, Ukrainian nationalists, patients of the Kyiv psychiatric hospital, prisoners of the Syrets camp, and all those whom the Nazis considered enemies. More than 100,000 civilians and prisoners of war were killed.
