Memorial at the military cemetery in Uzhgorod: the work is suspended, but there is still hope (PHOTOS)
In the Uzhgorod neighbourhood Shakhta, on Timiryazev street, there is an interesting historical object - a First World War military cemetery.
Since 2012, the issue of its restoration and even building of a memorial to the soldiers buried there has been discussed regularly. Research has been carried out, and even several projects have been developed. However, none of them was accepted.
The latest international arrangements for the reconstruction and building of a memorial were made last summer during a visit of the Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv Pavol Pesek to Uzhgorod. Since that time, lots of work has been done at the cemetery and it was cleaned up again. Also last September, German officials exhumed the remains of German soldiers and officers. However, the threat of a coronavirus pandemic put a stop to all work.
But no one gave up on the reconstruction plans, so there is hope for the future.
