The Roma of Transcarpathia appealed to the US Embassy to protect their dignity
Recently, all media outlets published the scandalous news that the NGO "Roma Community of Transcarpathia" sued the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk for insultting the honor and dignity of their national minority. This caused a great uproar in the society. A number of people who call themselves Roma leaders have expressed their position and condemned the actions of the NGO, the karpat.in.ua writes.
The position of the leader of the Roma community in Transcarpathia is set out in the official statement.
"Dear Roma! Our honor and dignity were humiliated by a high-ranking official who had the nerve to speak to us as if to some creatures, not people. We cannot stand aside and allow anyone, even if he is a "man in power", to treat Roma like that.
For decades, the Roma have always been a minority. We have not been considered human, have been humiliated, insulted, evicted. This is not acceptable in the civilized world!
The idea of creating our organization has been brewing for a long time. Its purpose is to protect the rights, honor and dignity of the Roma, not to make public statements for political PR.
After the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk publicly humiliated our brothers and sisters, we made the final decision that we must unite and protect ourselves.
We enlisted the support of top government officials and sent an official letter to the US Embassy in Ukraine asking to prevent racial discrimination against the Roma population.
We will stand to the end, defending the rights of every Roma!
I call on all Roma in Transcarpathia to join us and to show that Roma are not a minority - we are people too, we have our rights and we can protect them."
