Uzhgorod has traditionally joined the European Mobility Week, which this year is taking place under the slogan "Let’s walk!" The idea behind the event, as previously reported, is to create the conditions for safe pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
A road safety lesson for young cyclists and pedestrians was held this morning on Nezalezhnist Embankment, near the secondary school No. 3.
Students of the schools No. 3 and the Linguistic Gymnasium took place in the event. Officers of the patrol police in Transcarpathian region, in particular bicycle patrol, told the children about traffic rules, showed how to cross bicycle paths, handed out information booklets and light-reflective bracelets. The NGO "Forza", the youth organization "Initiative for the Development of the Region" joined the event, which was supported by the Uzhgorod City Council.
The Mayor of Uzhgorod Bohdan Andriyiv congratulated the children, called on to take care of the environment, to promote a healthy lifestyle, to set an example for both peers and adults.
Besides, the Mayor reminded that the campaign "Day without cars" would take place on Sunday, September 22. In particular, September 22, bus rides on the routes №18 "Epicenter – UzhNU and №20 "Domanyntsi" neighbourhood – Market" will be free of charge upon presentation of a technical passport for a vehicle.
The European Mobility Week is a pan-European initiative aimed at improving the environment and living conditions in the communities. The event encourages local governments in European countries to introduce and support sustainable transport development and to encourage residents to use alternative modes of transport. It takes place every year from September 16-22 and each time is dedicated to a different topic of sustainable mobility.
This year’s European Mobility Week pays special attention to safe walking and cycling, as well as the benefits it can have for health, the environment and your budget.
