Acorn gathering season has started in Transcarpathia

The seeds of hard-wooded broad-leaved species for the future forest planting campaign are the key to the success of the young forest. Acorns are a valuable planting material that is required for the restoration of forests in the territory of the State Forest Fund. The main requirement for storing acorns is to maintain a high moisture content.
Annual harvesting of forest seeds depends on the volume of forest restoration work and the crop yield, and varies somewhat from year to year. Given the frequency of fruiting, especially of the main forest-forming species (fir, common oak and red oak, beech), the actual seed harvest in good years is much higher than target, which is necessary for the stocks of seed material for subsequent years when the yield may be low or nonexistent.
The best time to sow acorns is spring due to the highest soil moisture content. If acorns are sown in autumn, it is necessary to take measures to protect the seed from rodents and freezing.
Every year, students help to harvest acorns. This enables foresters to share their forestry experience with future generations.
