Ukrainian tobacco smugglers will spent a total of66 years in a Hungarian prison

The smugglers, who formed a criminal organized group and were smuggling cigarettes from Ukraine to Hungary, were sentenced to a total of 66 years in prison.

This decision was made by the district court of the city of Nyiregyhaza (Hungary). In particular, two organizers and the ringleader of the smuggling scheme were sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 6, 9 and 7.5 years. Other defendants were sentenced to imprisonment for a term of one to six years.

It is known that the criminal organization was active in 2015, its members were regularly smuggling cigarettes across the Tisa river by boat. The criminals were using mobile phones registered for other people, during conversations, they would use aliases instead of names, and also would use a Ukrainian radio.

Some members of the group were engaged in the delivery and sale of cigarettes in the "black market". Others were monitoring the border, maintaining contact with the Ukrainian side.

It was found out that the defendants, together with other unknown associates, had brought at least 53.477 packs of cigarettes to the territory of Hungary, causing damage to the country’s budget in the amount of almost 40 million forints.
