The city authorities responded to the scandal in Uzhgorod, but questions remain

We already reported how right-wing radicals in Uzhgorod tried to disrupt the rally in support of women’s rights and for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. The incident caused a stormy public reaction, especially in social networks.

The reaction of journalist and public figure Volodymyr Feskov published on Facebook is particularly noteworthy. Volodymyr asked the city officials whether representatives of the executive power, who knew about the rally, notified the police about it?

The City Hall responded and this is what they said in the official statement:

"Yesterday, March 8, an incident, which is unacceptable in a civilized legal country, occurred in the center of Uzhgorod.

A rally in support of women’s rights and for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention was taking place on Teatralna Square. However, representatives of radical organizations disrupted the event, thus directly violating the constitutional right of every citizen of Ukraine to freedom of thought, expression, belief and religion.

Uzhgorod City Council strongly condemns such manifestations of intolerance and asks law enforcement agencies to make every effort to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The right to freedom of peaceful assembly is one of the fundamental human rights recognized by the international community and any attack on it is an offense that can not be tolerated," – the press service of Uzhgorod City Council informs.
