A draft decision on the removal of the mayor has been submitted to Uzhgorod City Council. It was registered and published on the official website of the City Council, as well as other draft decisions submitted to the session, it is stated on the official page of the City Council on Facebook. In the accompanying note to the draft decision< it is stated that it is allegedly an initiative of a group of residents who were guided by the applicable Regulations on local initiatives in Uzhgorod.
"We have a democracy. Uzhgorod residents, as well as inhabitants of other towns or villages, can initiate the consideration of any matter relating to the local community. This is stipulated by the Law "On local government in Ukraine". But this particular draft is illegal because there is a clearly defined procedure for removal of mayors from office by initiative of the public.
The detailed legal evaluation of the draft is to be done by lawyers. In my opinion, it is an attempt of destructive forces to destabilize the situation in the city. But I want to assure Uzhgorod residents: the City Council is working as usually. Currently, the darft decision with such a mechanism, where the concept of people’s initiative is used to manipulate the public opinion, does not entail any legal consequences," – Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv said.
