Liquidators of the Chornobyl accident were honored in Uzhgorod

Currently, in Uzhgorod, there live 681 people who have the right to benefits under the Law of Ukraine "On the Status and Social Protection of Citizens Affected by the Chornobyl Catastrophe". Of those, 339 are liquidators, 162 are victims of Chornobyl accident, 39 widows, and 141 children have the status of victims of the Chornobyl catastrophe.

On the eve of the Day of Commemoration of the Liquidators of Chornobyl Accident, a joint meeting was held in the House of Trade Unions in Uzhgorod with the participation of the deputy mayor of Uzhgorod, the board of the public organization "Chornobyl Union of Ukraine", liquidators.

The event began with a minute of silence to honor the dead liquidators of the accident.

The chairman of the Uzhgorod City Organization "Chernobyl Union of Ukraine" Oleksandr Chemet addressed the participants of the meeting. The deputy mayor Oleksandr Bilak also addressed to the audience and thanked them for stopping the radiation at the cost of their health, and, for some, even life. He also reported that this year the City Council was taking the measures to support Chornobyl victims, in particular in April 2017, on the the 31st anniversary of the accident, 20 people received material assistance, now, on the Day of Commemoration of the Liquidators, material assistance was provided to 38 people; in total more than 25 thousand hryvnia was allocated. Also, a draft decision on the allocation of funds for the repair of appartments of Chornobyl victims in the amount of 52 thousand hryvnias was submitted for the consideration of the City Council.
