Today, as we already announced, there was a meeting regarding the felling of trees near the neighbourhood "Shakhta" in Uzhgorod, which has caused concern among local residents.
Its results were reported on Facebook by the "Ecosphere":
"At first, we argued a little about the feasibility of felling and marking of trees for felling, as most oaks are not sick and could grow for decades or hundreds of years (this is evident from the photos). Then we mentioned about the low qualification of the fellers (the contractor provided all the documents for the workers, in particular qualification) – most of the trees were cut with violations, as they caused damage to the neighboring ones – oaks and hornbeams, which will also be cut. We talked about that tracks for mountain biking destroyed as a result of the felling by the wheels of the vehicles.
Finally, we found out what we came to the meeting for: the reason for the felling was the need for firewood from the territory of Uzhgorod Forestry Enterprise for inhabitants of Uzhgorod and the surrounding villages…" So, the NGO "Ecosphere" asks: "Citizens of Uzhgorod! We must make up our minds: what do we need forests around Uzhgorod for? For recreation and as a "green belt" of the city, which still lacks green zones according to the norms of the State Building Regulations; or for firewood?… As a result, we decided that we would seek a compromise."
According to the information, the meeting was attended from the city community by a group of young people from various sports communities, an elderly couple, who live nearby and take a walk in the forest every day, and a representative of the NGO "ECOSPHERE". "To the credit of the Uzhgorod State Forestry Enterprise, everything went constructively and with mutual understanding," – the report says.
