On Christmas Eve, 12 meatless dishes must be cooked in Ukraine, each of which has a distinct meaning

What we put on the table, that we invoke to our family.

So, the dishes and products that they are made of have deep symbolic significance.

Kutya (main dish on the table) - symbolizes the unity with God and the world of the dead. Therefore, it is left overnight for departed souls, and not removed from the table.

Poppy seeds, which are added to the kutya - represent the martyrdom of Jesus Christ.

Honey - a symbol of purity, hope, optimism, sweet word of God.

Korachun (round loaf of bread, sometimes pastries, cake) - symbolizes death and resurrection.

Peas, beans - a symbol of Christian life at "home", "family church", a symbol of unity of the family.

Cabbage soup - a symbol of unity around a foundation - Christ-God.

Borsch - reminds of the children killed in Bethlehem the night by order of Herod.

Cabbage rolls - a symbol of the dove that brings peace.

Fish - a sign of Christians, a symbol of Jesus Christ. In the first letter sof the Greek word "fish", words "Jesus Christ," "Savior," "Son of God" are encoded.

Varenyky - abundance, satiety.

Mushrooms - two natures of Jesus: divine (cap) and earthly (root).

Donuts - happiness, health, and like varenyky - abundance.

Compote - life given by God.

Garlic - atonement. Also symbolizes health. It is put on the four corners of the table, and then consumed so that teeth do not hurt.
