Transcarpathian Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater opened the 71st theatrical season with the new premiere production of "Hamlet." But this interpretation of the Shakespeare’s play not only shows the tragedy of the past. Rather it draws a parallel between past and present. The tragedy takes us from medieval Denmark to modern Ukraine.

"The play reflects the issues of life and death, betrayal and love, as well as the events happening right now. But we are not talking about them literally," – the director Yaroslav Helyas says. His father Yaroslav Helyas was the first Hamlet in Ukraine. And in the period from 1974 to 1992, he was also the chief director of the Transcarpathian Regional State Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre.

Interestingly, the role of Hamlet was perfectly played by his grandson – Lyubomyr Helyas.

The premiere of "Hamlet" is dedicated to Yaroslav Helyas’s 100th anniversary. In the future, his son intends to tour the production of the cities in Ukraine, where his father used to play Hamlet. And today and on Sunday, October 23, audience will be able to see "Hamlet" in Uzhgorod.

Thranscarpathian "Hamlet" was already presented at the theater festival in Dnipro dedicated to the events in Eastern Ukraine. Before the show, at 18.00, there will be the meeting of journalists with the cast and crew.
