"Transcarpathian community" believes that decommunisation process in Uzhgorod is too slow

Recommendations for renaming of Uzhgorod streets named after persons involved in the establishment of Soviet power and associated with the communist past have been developed by the "Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies." They were sent to Uzhgorod Mayor Bogdan Andriyiv and the head of the Transcarpathian regional state administration Hennadiy Moskal.

The Ministry of Education supported the suggestions of the working group of Uzhgorod city council for renaming of the streets. Also, "Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies" made proposals on renaming of two more streets that fall under the law of Ukraine "On the condemnation of Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) totalitarian regimes in Ukraine and the prohibition of propaganda of their symbols." The Institute proposed to rename Ivan Turyanytsia street in honor of the leader of Hutsul Republic Stepan Klochurak and Krasnodontsi street to Oleksandr Blystiv street. Oleksandr Blystiv died in Khust prison during the occupation of Carpatho-Ukraine by Hungarian troops.

The deputy chairman of the NGO "Transcarpathian community" Taras Hayduk said that the process of decommunisation in Transcarpathia was too slow, which, probably, caused the "Lennon" incident. Uzhgorod, as the capital of the region, should have set the pace of this process, but, unfortunately, according to Hayduk, there is a sort of sabotage here.

According to insider information, on March 10, at the next session of Uzhgorod City Council, there will an attempt to disrupt the voting for the already developed draft decision that gives our city a truly European face.

Also, the NGO "Transcarpathian community" expects the response to the request sent to Uzhgorod city council with questions about those deputies who plan to change the proposals on street renaming made by the public or even to disrupt the voting. Thus, the process of "de-communization" remains under the watchful eye of the community.
