On Thursday, July 7, Bozdosh park in Uzhgorod was "set on fire". The celebration of the Midsummer holiday is becoming a tradition in the city. This time, there was singing and dancing, decoration of trees with ribbons, and, of course, weaving of chaplets.
Many girls, sending chaplets down the river, admitted that they had never done this before, however, they were happy to take part in the beautiful Ukrainian traditions. And the culmination of the holiday was everything related to fire, but first… a real wedding. The bride – Natalia Sentimrey – is a co-organizer of the Midsummer event in Uzhgorod, and decided to combine the personal celebration with the public one. So, she and her fiance Pavlo Forkosh married on the bank of the Uzh adorned with torches in the presence of numerous witnesses.
And after that, an incredible spectacle began. First, they rolled a burning wheel into the river – as the ancestors did it on Midsummer. Then, they made on the bank a path of glowing coal. Followers of the famous coal-walker Bogdan Dyky made ritual circles around the fire, then walked on the coal.
The final stage of the festival was, of course, Midsummer bonfire. The fire was a few meters high. People were dancing around the fire. Once the fire was less high, people, according to the old tradition, began jumping over the fire, which, according to beliefs, will bring happiness and luck for the rest of the year. The organizers promise that the Midsummer celebration in Uzhgorod will be traditional.
